There is wonderful depth to the combat systems, and the way you approach the world itself - but not of a lot of time is spent explaining it to you. Yeah, I didn't mind that either - but I'm going to go ahead and say that this is a game that is pretty unfriendly to newcomers. It doesn't faff about - you just get in there, start exploring, and figure out the basics for yourself. I find it refreshing that there is a bit of assumed knowledge in a game like this. It did feel a bit like that, didn't it! Likewise there isn't much in the way of tutorials, either. From a player perspective it kind of feels like - some stuff happens, then suddenly you're thrown into the wilderness of Mordor with a wraith inside you. Yeah, and they have meticulously mined the appropriate lore from the universe to craft this story - I just wished they'd done a little bit more to flesh it out at the start to a foundation for the characters. And the story really starts to open up the further you get in. Yeah - Celebrimbor has a case of wraith-induced amnesia, so figuring out who he was and what his role in the greater story of the Lord of the Rings is - is where it gets more interesting. Somehow, though - the Wraith manages to become merged with Talion - and he rises again to fight another day - now armed with cool wraithy powers! On the surface it appears to be a stock-standard story of vengeance, doesn't it - but the Wraith inside Talion adds an extra layer of mystery. Talion and his garrison are stationed at the Black Gate of Mordor - when they are attacked by Sauron's forces, led by three terrifying Black Captains - and the Black Hand of Sauron.Īfter a valiant struggle, Talion, his wife and his son are all killed in a ritual sacrifice by the Black Hand and his not-so-merry-men - in an attempt to summon the Wraith of an Elf Lord - Celebrimbor. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an open-world action RPG that sees you take the role of a Ranger from Gondor. Platform: PC, PS3, PS4, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE Developed by: Monolith Productions, Behaviour Interactive
